A site of unforgettable beauty characterizes Erice, an ancient Phoenician and Greek city, perched at a height of 751 m on the mountain of the same name, crowned by a triangular plateau with a terrace overlooking the sea. Defended by ramparts and walls, the city is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and passages so narrow as to allow the passage of a single man. The houses, closed to each other, have pretty and well-kept internal courtyards, defended and protected from the sight of passers- by so that family life takes place in complete intimacy. In ancient times, Erice was known for its temple where the Phoenicians worshiped Astarte, the Greeks Aphrodite and the Romans Venus. Mount Eryx served as a reference point for navigators of which Venus soon became the protector. At night, a large fire lit in the sacred area served as a lighthouse. The fame of Venus Ericina became such that a temple was also dedicated to her in Rome and her cult spread throughout the Mediterranean. Try the characteristic sweet of erice"Genovese": NOT INCLUDED

5° DAY:

(Out of the resort) Salemi, entered the club "Most beautiful villages in Italy" in 2016.
Its delightful old town, located 500 m. from sea level, with its narrow streets, squares, ancient palaces, churches and the castle, it is a real open-air museum, a place where it is always pleasant to walk.
The first to settle in the area were the Elimi who founded the city of Halyciae; at the time of the war between Selinunte and Segesta the city was called Alicia; later it was dominated by the Romans, the Goths, the Byzantines, the Arabs (who renamed it Saleiman, which means 'place of delight'), by the Normans, by the Swabians, by the Bourbons and finally it was liberated by Garibaldi in 1860. In that on the tower of the Norman-Swabian castle the tricolor flag was raised for the first time and Salemi symbolically declared the first capital of Italy.
To visit: Norman-Swabian Castle, remains of the former Mother Church, Baroque Mother Church, Ritual Bread Museum that collects and tells the tradition of ritual bread in all of Sicily. Every form of bread, prepared at a particular time of the year and with a specific shape, has a very specific meaning that tells us a lot about our land and our origins.
From Salemi to the Baglio Oneto about 30 km 39 min.
NOT INCLUDED

(Out of the resort) Gibellina and “Cretto di Burri: Gibellina, the new city symbol of contemporary art. An “en plein air” museum, which happily celebrates the evocative marriage between the ancient greenery of rural landscape and the multicolored abstractions of contemporary art. It is the irresistible charm of Gibellina (from the Arabic gebel, “high ground”), the new city reborn from the rubble of the 1968 Belice earthquake. Fortyyears ago, thanks to the intuition of the legendary mayor Ludovico Corrao, from the tragedy of the earthquake arose the idea of creating from scratch a unique space in the world, where world-renowned architects, painters, intellectuals and sculptors, including Vittorio Gregotti, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Pietro Consagra, Mario Schifano, Alberto Burri and Leonardo Sciascia, could test their talent in the field, producing an extraordinary graft of modern art on a peasant cultural fabric. Thus was born the new Gibellina marked by an enormousstar, 24 meters high, a symbol of rebirth, created by Pietro Consagra and visible even from afar. It is the “Entrance to the Belice” and acts as a gateway to the urban center built on the model of the English new towns.

Gibellina is a garden city, characterized by large streets and spaces, with an elliptical and centrifugal plan, in the shape of a butterfly. Inside, scattered almost everywhere, there are modern works of art and architecture: the Mother Church od Ludovico Quaroni “white sphere” in concrete, the Secret Gardens of Francesco Venezia, Piazza XV January 1968 with the Civic Tower of Alessandro Mendini, the ceramics by Carla Attardi and the portico by Vittorio Gregotti and Giuseppe Samonà, the system of squares by Laura Thermes and Franco Purini, Palazzo Di Lorenzo by Francesco Venezia, the War Memorial by Uncini, the Labyrinth by Nino Franchina and many others. Do not miss a visit to the Civic Museum of Contemporary Art, which houses canvases donated by great artists such as Carla Accardi, Beniamino Joppolo, Toti Scialoja, Afro Basaldella, Guttuso, Fausto Pirandello and many others. Importannt artistic works can also be found along the avenues of the Gibellina Botanical Garden.

The oldest dwellings in the city - the end of the sixth century BC - are located along the slopes of the mountain; the urban plant, with various transformations and constructions realized in the centuries V a.C. - II d.C., in which are also visible some possible viari paths, extended, on two peaks: North Acropolis (public buildings, agora, theater and, at lower elevation, a house) and South (dwellings: "house of the ships") connected by a saddle and defended to the East and to the South by very steep natural walls, while the other slopes were equipped, in classical times, with a wall belt with monumental doors and, in the early imperial age, of a second one, located at a higher altitude.

Outside the walls, in 430 - 420 BC, stands the Temple of Doric-Sicelian type; Outside the walls is visible the sanctuary in the Mango district (VI-V century B.C.) and a Necropolis of the Hellenistic period in the area facing the “Porta di Valle”. NOT INCLUDED
